SOMETHING NEW YORK
Recently I had the fantastic opportunity to visit the DKNY headquarters to check out the fall line and chat with the folks at StyleCaster about what it is to be a New Yorker.
Shortly after arriving at a fairly nondescript building in the Garment District I entered a room not unlike the sample closet featured in The Devil Wears Prada which was chockablock with clothes and accessories from the brand’s ‘New York Mod’ fall 2011 collection. There I was informed that it would be my job to come up with three looks that reflect my personal style as it relates to my neighborhood in the city – the West Village. Pretty exciting stuff given there’s rarely and opportunity to get that up close and personal with a collection. Even if you go to a runway show you’d be tackled by large security personnel if you attempted to study a moving hem.
Now usually it’s not difficult for me to visually edit down racks of clothes. In fact, I think women are genetically predisposed to this kind of selective visual merchandising (which would also explain why men complain of vertigo when they’re required to venture out alone to find just one respectable tie). This time, however, I was faced by quite a challenge not because there were too many items but because there were too many items that fit my criteria for a good investment and would hang naturally with things I already own. I found outerwear to be most compelling – a leather-sleeved coat, a mod contrast-collar blazer, and a ‘mixed media’ jacket (which featured a number of different wools) were my personal favorites though they would really suit a variety of fashion tastes. I’m also big fan of black lace and collars which surprisingly existed in a single piece and trousers that hug the rear and flare slightly at the knee. Lots to see and wear! Check out the looks I chose in their entirety to the right and see the complete StyleCaster x DKNY feature ‘Something New York’ by visiting DKNY.com or StyleCaster.com.
And, of course, come say hello tonight at the DKNY store on Madison Avenue! I’ve got my Fashion’s Night Out-fit laid out above (Notch Collar Jacket, Button Thru Blouse with Contrasting Collar, Sexy Flare Leg Trousers (all courtesy of DKNY) and J.Crew Belt). What will you be wearing?
