MAKING A STATEMENT
It’s almost Halloween and, to some retailers, that means it’s Christmas. Already. No, I’m not going to use this opportunity to gripe about commercialism – this is a fashion website for crying out loud. However, it is fair to begin discussing one holiday issue that could benefit from some early attention – jewelry.
Chances are you’ll be attending more than one festive gathering and, if you don’t invest in new outfits for each, you’ll want to maximize the usefulness of a limited number of pieces. Because a little shine goes a long way, jewelry is great for adding dimension to or completely transforming outfits that need to make a statement again and again. Take cues from some of fashion’s most memorable women like Coco Chanel (right) and Diana Vreeland who used substantial pieces of jewelry to liven up otherwise sedate looks. Being fashionable and festive doesn’t mean chucking out your closet, but it can mean adding some dazzling new layers of interest.
I recommend keeping an eye out for statement costume jewelry early to avoid the what-am-I-going-to-wear panic that is otherwise bound to sour your merriment. The internet is a great place to start with many specialty websites that offer an infinite variety of one-of-a-kind and vintage pieces. My favorites are Ruby Lane, Trocadero, and 1stdibs.com.
