MAJE AND SANDRO TAKE NEW YORK
415/417 Bleecker Street in New York City was the empty shell of a Thai restaurant for over a year – surprising given that the street has become a kind of Madison Avenue South, commanding some of the highest retail rent in the world. Because the newest presences on Bleecker are fashion giants like Burberry, Michael Kors, and Jimmy Choo, it would be logical to assume that the space would eventually be picked up by another ubiquitous luxury brand with deep pockets. Suffice to say that it was interesting to see ‘under construction’ signage announcing the arrival of French favorites and US newcomers, Maje and Sandro.
Opening today, 415/417 Bleecker is the third major location Maje and Sandro have secured in New York City in the past few months. With new shop-in-shops at Bloomingdale’s and storefronts in Soho, these French labels are certainly on some kind of upper-middle market fashion crusade and definitely worth a look. Both brands have a healthy mix of wardrobe staples and fashion items with prices that are high but not totally outrageous (a silk button-up is $285 while a leather biker jacket is $770). For those of you who are outside of the New York area, a selection of pieces from both brands is available on Net-A-Porter or you can wait for their proprietary e-commerce to launch in the near future.
