No one is surprised when a bombshell and an English rock star get together unless the ‘behind closed doors’ they think you’re referring to belong to the closet. Sure, David Bowie and Brigitte Bardot didn’t have a fling in real life, but the rocker’s 1973 blazer and the sailor stripe which Bardot modeled so effectively have had a beautiful, lasting union. Not too long ago, French accessories designer Pierre Hardy opened up his New York flagship next to my neighborhood coffee shop…thereby exponentially increasing the amount of willpower I’d need before noon. Luckily, I’ve managed to avoid any caffeine-fueled spending sprees on clever, architectural bags and shoes and may be able to hold out a little longer by finding hints of the brand at lesser price points. The styles below from Pour La Victoire, aimed at members of a different tax bracket, might be a good compromise. They certainly look the part.

Since we’re on a retro modeling tangent, I thought it would be a good time to mention the 1983 movie, Portfolio. V Magazine uploaded the full-length version a couple of weeks ago and it’s an hour and a half of 80’s camp. The plot centers around Elite Model Management’s Jennifer Conolley look-a-like, Julie Wolfe, as she tries to break into the industry (though she was an established model by that time) while providing a life-without-the-boring-bits glimpse of other famous faces like Paulia Porizkova and Carol Alt. Other cameos include Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Francesco Scavullo, Valentino, Antonio Lopez, Andy Warhol, and Pat Cleveland. Also, expect fashion show footage from Issey Miyake, Perry Ellis, Valentino, and Azzedine Alaia. Have a look!

A lot has changed in the modeling industry over the past sixty years. The photos below (via Gothamist) shed a bit of light on the venerable Ford Model Agency in its first few years of existence when Mrs. Eileen Ford and her husband, Jerry, ran the rapidly growing business from a small office in a less-than-ideal part of New York City. Today, the agency has been sold, and its editorial women’s board is run from a sprawling, Rafael de Cardenas designed penthouse just south of Central Park.
