The More Things Change…
If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check out the newly available subscriber’s section of the Vogue Archive. Don’t expect the full experience which includes every issue and powerful search and printing capabilities, but do expect a very good introduction (or reintroduction) to fashion history.
My first stop was the September 2002 issue and, frankly, I was a bit surprised by how little has changed. The cover features a lovely, young blonde actress and a feature inside crowns the heir to her throne, Gisele rules the editorial and campaign pages, the boys of Proenza Schouler are the young guns of New York fashion, Haider Ackermann is still up-and-coming, and the rotation of photographers is pretty much the same. Sadly, Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts (among others) have left us and Manolo Blahnik no longer advertises in the back pages with his fun illustrations, but, as for the rest, I suppose if it ain’t broke…
